Maintaining or replacing tyres is costly and reduces the available haul time of each truck. Consequently, managing a mine fleet’s tyres for optimal performance is challenging and involves collaboration between drivers, maintenance teams and purchasing managers.

This digital-assist tyre-management solution tracks individual driver’s KPIs and continually monitors each tyre in real-time to accurately forecast the lifecycle and highlight ways to extend its life. It analyses data on the tread depth, positioning, history and milage of each tyre and advises on the best tyres for particular situations available from stock or elsewhere. Using these data analytics and forecasts helps the maintenance and procurement teams to manage the use and extend the lifecycle of each tyre.

The platform can be integrated with any FMS, TPMS and external sensors, as well as ERP systems for procurement and accounting, providing tyre data on demand. It is proven to increase tyre lifecycle by 5-10% and to make annual savings of around $340,000, based on a mine fleet of 30 trucks such as CAT777, 785C, Komatsu 785-7. It also reduces tyre failures by 50-60%, which improves health and safety by reducing injuries.

The challenge

Haul-truck tyres have to work over extremely rough terrain and they suffer severe wear and tear. Tyre damage is further compounded by poor driving, inefficient arrangements of tyres from the front axle to the rear and inaccurate tread-depth measurements.

Maintaining these tyres is costly and can eat into the shift time of each haul truck. When tyres are beyond repair, they are replaced at great expense. Meanwhile, if the tyre yard is poorly disorganised, it can take time to find a suitable replacement based on tread depth and mileage. And, if tyre cards are not kept up-to-date with information on repairs, damage and write-offs, it is difficult to effectively manage tyre purchase, a problem that is often solved by buying and storing an excess of new tyres.
